Witness Young Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa beat World No. 1

Monday, 21st Feb 2022 – Indian Chess Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa, who is just 16 years old, defeated World No. 1, Magnus Carlsen, in an online rapid chess tournament – Airthings Masters’ 2022 – 8th round. This is the first time time that Carlsen was managed to be defeated by Praggnanandhaa.

Magnus Carlsen’s 3-Match winning run was ended by the Young Indian Grandmaster by defeating him in black pieces, with just 19 moves in a Tarrasch variation game. Praggnanandhaa, after 8 rounds with 8 points, holds the joint 12th position in this chess tournament.

Rameshbabu Praggnanandha – Background !

R. Praggnanandhaa, an Indian Chess Grandmaster, was born on 10 August 2005. After Abhimanyu Mishra, Sergey Karjakin, Gukesh D and Javokhir Sindarov, R.Praggnanandhaa is the fifth-youngest person ever to achieve the title of Grandmaster (GM). He is the younger sibling of Vaishali Rameshbabu, who won the Girls’ World Youth Chess Championship for Under-14s and Under-12s. She is 10th Indian woman to become an International Master by receiving the Woman International Master title in 2016.

After losing three games in a row, Praggnanandhaa’s won the first time in any form of chess against the Norwegian whereas Carlsen, yesterday, finished down in fifth-up from 11th on the leaderboard. The final win of Praggnanandhaa over Carlsen came after a moderate run in the earlier rounds of the tournament, including two draws, four losses and a single victory over Lev Aronian.

Currently, Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi is at the top of the standings in the tournament with 19 points. Following him in the next positions are Ding Liren and Hansen (both with 15 points).
