On 1st July, every year we celebrate the National Doctors’ Day in India. Doctors play a very important role in the society. They dedicate their lives for patients’ well-being, help in swifter recovery from the illness and improve the quality of life.
For 2022, the theme for National Doctor’s Day is “Family Doctors on the Front Line.” To celebrate this day, a number of activities take place at school and college to make young students aware of the roles and importance of the healthcare workers.

History of National Doctor’s Day
In the honour of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, India observed the first National Doctors’ Day on 01 July 1991 to pay tribute to his contributions in health domain.
Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy (01 July 1882 – 01 July 1962) was a renowned physician and an educationist. He was also a freedom fighter, a social worker and a politician. He also served as a Chief Minister (1948 – 1962) of West Bengal for 14 years. On 04 February 1961, he was awarded with the highest Indian civilian award, THE BHARAT RATNA.
He contributed his entire life for the people, in treating many and inspiring millions. The B.C. Roy National Award was instituted in his memory in the year 1976, to recognize and pay tribute to the eminent people working in the fields of medicine, science, public affairs, philosophy, arts and literature.
Importance of National Doctor’s Day
Doctors and all the healthcare workers not only treat patients but also educate the future generations of doctors in the country. Few doctors also provide free medical services to the poor and underprivileged. Many have even lost their lives during the Covid-19 pandemic by contracting the illness while treating patients.
This annual event helps in spreading the awareness about the vital role played by doctors in our society. On this day, patients show appreciation for their doctors, free check-up camps are set up, and students are educated about their significant contribution to the mankind.
