On the occasion of World Kidney Day, let’s pledge to keep our kidneys healthy by eating healthy, drinking clean water and fruit juices, keeping our sugar levels and blood pressure in check, exercising regularly, avoiding junk food and sedentary lifestyle, keeping restrooms/toilets clean, maintaining healthy sanitary habits and getting a health checkup once in a while.

Today, on an exclusive interview session with Indian Broadcast Network, we have with us Dr. Piush Pandey, who did his MBBS from KMC Mangalore and is currently working at ILS Hospitals, Howrah and Eastern Railways Orthopedic Hospitals. 

What is the Importance of Kidney in our Lives ?

KIDNEYS are part of our Renal System, functional unit of kidney is called Nephron. Basic functions of kidneys are – maintaining volume and composition of body fluids and maintaining acid – base balance, excretion of metabolic end products (ammonia, urea and creatinine, uric acids), drugs and toxins. The ENDOCRINE Functions are – production of erythropoietin which is important for RBC production, Vit D Metabolism and secretion of renin which helps in maintaining Blood Pressure.

What are the Common Diseases Associated with Kidneys ?
Some of the common kidney diseases includes – Renal Stones/Calculi, Infections like UTI( urinary tract infection), pyelonephritis, AKI, CKD, Nephrotic syndrome, RCC etc
What are the Symptoms of Kidney Diseases ?
Basic symptoms may be specific or non specific, patients may be asymptomatic during initial stages of kidney diseases. Other symptoms may include Fever (UTI, Pyelonephritis), Anuria (absense or <50ml urine outpur per day – renal failure/outflow obstructions), Oliguria, Polyuria – diabetics, hypokalemia, hypercalcemia, Loin pain -renal colic, Colicky pain radiating from loin to groin – ureteric colic, Hematuria – may suggest calculi, glomerulonephritis, RCC, renal failure and Foul smelling urine – infections. 
How often should we get health check-ups done ?
Everyone should have full body checkup including renal function tests at least once a year. It can be done quarterly or biannually depending on patient to patient depending on co-morbidities.
